The technical professional bachelor's programme International Built Environment of Breda University of Applied Sciences has the differentiation specialization of “International Spatial Development”.

This programme prepares you for a career in the creation and optimization of international living environments and in the design, functions and accessibility of areas, or locations. You will be trained to become a professional, capable of operating in the international market.

You will learn how to design safe roads, manage urban planning efficiently, influence people towards making clever transport choices and think and design strategically.  You will also learn to plan and design, from the perspective of area development in the broadest sense of the word. You will produce sketches and designs for land use and you will build scale models.

This programme will start with a broad basis of knowledge of the built environment. Throughout your course of study, you will have various specialization opportunities.

Year 1 & 2: Exploration and Integration

Familiarization with the comprehensive discipline through courses, training sessions, projects and workshops related to the central themes: Dutch Design, Sustainable (Urban) Mobility Planning, Water Management, Flexible Use of Space, Smart Cities and Societies, Energy.

At the end of year two you can opt for becoming a specialist:

“Strategic Designer”

In this role you will focus on integrating strategic design with the process of shaping society. Your objective in this process will be designing future cities. Projects and courses: urbanism, design, sociology, and drawing and visualization skills (by using Illustrator and Photoshop).

“Urban Planner”

This role is all about developing a long-term vision of planning while at the same time allowing scope for all stakeholders to collaborate and accomplish their own ideas. You will optimize and align living, working, mobility and recreational conditions. Projects and courses: research methods, quality of life, financial control, sustainability and environment, governance and project management.

“Sustainable Urban Mobility Manager”

The main focus comprises behavioural changes in mobility. Just think of promoting active modes of transport such as walking and cycling. You will optimize the use of public transport and incorporate smart work and mobility solutions into people’s daily lives. Projects and courses: travel behaviour and safety, mobility management and their relation to urban planning and design (including road design).

Year 3 : Intensification and Work Placement

All students perform two work placements, during year 3, both lasting for three months. These placements provide you with on-the-job-experience and allow you to learn as you work at a company that matches your interests and ambitions.

Your placement can be at an international company in the Netherlands, or abroad. Multinationals, consultancy firms, or government services are examples of suitable companies.

- Major (3 months). In-depth focus on spatial design, technology/engineering, energy and management

- Year 4: Specialization and Graduation Project

- Minor (4 months). Choice of minors on: Society and Space, Space and Mobility or Design

-Graduation project (5 months): Choice of own graduation project and organization for example: strategic design for climate adaptive city.

Fast track (3 years)

The fast track may be available for Greek students dependent on your diploma rates and previous education. A Greek high school diploma (Apolityrio Genikou Lykeio), with grades of at least 17 in one or more of the following subject would be preferable for successfully following this course: Mathematics.

All international applications will be decided on a case by case basis, to ensure the standard of the diploma will be appropriate for the fast track.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

As an international applicant, you will also be required to demonstrate sufficient results of one of these tests:

CAE (Cambridge Advanced Certificate), or CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

IELTS test (minimum overall band score of 6.0, and minimum subscore of 6.0 for speaking)

TOEFL test (minimum score of 80 internet-based, and minimum subscore of 20 for speaking)

Greek high school diploma (Apolytirio Genikou Lykeio), with a general grade of at least 10.  A grade of at least 15 in one or more of the following subject is preferable for successfully following this courses: Mathematics.

Applying for the academic year of 2018-2019 will be possible from 1 October 2017 until the application deadline of 1 May 2018.

In case you have not obtained your secondary school diploma yet, you can already apply by submitting your current grade list.

We advise you to apply before May 1. Breda University of Applied Sciences has the right to refuse applications by students which meet the admission requirements, but which are sent after May 1.  

Breda has a growing number of students, which is why accommodation in Breda can be scarce. Unfortunately, Breda University of Applied Sciences has no campus or student rooms of its own and, therefore, it will be your own responsibility to find accommodation in Breda. Rental prices for a student room in Breda vary from €300 to €500 per calendar month. However, you will most commonly find rooms to rent for around € 400. Make sure you book a room in time (preferably in the early spring), so you have the best chances to book the room that suits your wishes. Unfurnished rooms can be cheaper to rent than furnished ones and since most rooms in the Breda are unfurnished, you may need to furnish your room yourself. This doesn’t have to be expensive as there are many DIY stores, second hand stores and second hand websites and Facebook pages.

After your graduation at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, you are the international spatial development expert, who creates and implements sustainable solutions for the future, using the latest technology, design experience and planning principles.

Graduates are likely to find jobs as: Strategic Designer, Urban Planner and Manager of Sustainable (Urban) Mobility at (inter)national companies, advisory agencies, small and medium-sized enterprises, government services, private developers, design firms.

Breda University of Applied Sciences has a collaborative arrangement with FH Joanneum (Austria), allowing better preparation for and faster completion of your further studies.

At FH Joanneum in Kapfenberg (Austria) you can move on to further study at the  master’s programme “Energy and Transport Management”. As there is an overlap between this Master’s programme and our differentiation area of Mobility, this two-year master’s track can be compacted into 14 months.

No tuition fees involved ! To encourage foreign students to study in Austria, they don’t have to pay any tuition fees.

 Accommodation in an on-campus student flat in Kapfenberg (rental rate of approx. € 230 per month).
