The Master in Innovative Textile Development has been developed in response to a clear need from within the industry and has been co-created in collaboration with the textile industry. Companies told us about their strong need for graduates at master level, who are able to develop innovative materials, products, business models and production processes in a textiles context.

The Master in Innovative Textile Development trains you to become an expert in textile innovation. The programme focuses on innovation and sustainability in textiles. With this it provides a unique master programme in the Netherlands and Western Europe.

You will learn to develop new product-market combinations, new sustainable products and processes as well as new business concepts based on crossovers with other fields. For example: electronics, megatronics, industrial product design and mechanical engineering.

The textile industry must reinvigorate itself in order to survive and to keep up with the demands in today’s economy and society. Therefore, in this master programme you will acquire knowledge on new textile materials, such as composites, new applications and smart textiles, innovative products and state of the art techniques, such as 3D printing and digitalization.

For the first full year, you will study within the Saxion School of Creative Technology. You will spend the final half year working on your master thesis project, e.g. externally at a company, or within the Smart Functional Materials lectorate. 

The course includes course subjects such as: Textiles Technology, Textile and Color Chemistry, Composites, Technical and Functional Textiles, Digitalisation of Textiles production, Sustainable Textiles, Smart Textiles, Applied Textiles Sciences.

It also includes several projects such as: business and organizational skills such as commerce, entrepreneurship, research and communication. Technical competencies like prototyping and testing, as well as project work. Design competencies like conceptualisation and design, as well as project work. Technical aspects such as analyzing, prototyping and testing, as well as professional competencies like responsibility.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

As an international applicant, you will also be required to demonstrate sufficient results of one of these tests:

CAE (Cambridge Advanced Certificate), or CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

IELTS test (minimum overall band score of 6.0, and minimum subscore of 6.0 for speaking)

TOEFL test (minimum score of 80 internet-based, and minimum subscore of 20 for speaking)

A bachelor in Fashion and Textiles Technologies, or a similar degree such as AMFI qualifies you for direct admission.

If you have a bachelor of science in another field, supplemented by the transition course in textiles, you are also warmly welcome to apply. The transition course, for students with a bachelor of science in another field, amounts to a study load of approx. 100 hours and comprises a theoretical part and a practical part. You learn the theory at home, during an e-learning programme which includes online support from a lecturer. The practical part comprises a 3-day programme in our chemical and mechanical laboratory and our textiles studio, where you work on assignments that link the theory to practice. This 3-day session is held in Week 0, which is the week before the master programme gets underway.

After accepting your application the intake procedure will begin, comprising an assignment and an interview. For foreign students we can arrange an interview via Skype, or Facetime.

The maximum number of students is set at 24, so places are limited.

Applying for the September courses of the academic year 2018-2019 will be possible until the application deadline of July 1, 2018.

We encourage European students to find their own accommodation.

However, in case you would like to have everything arranged in time and want to immerse yourself in international student life, we offer the possibility to reserve a room in one of our international student houses. In all three cities we have contracts with the local student housing associations. They provide Saxion with accommodation with rooms, which may vary in size. The rooms are all single rooms and furnished with basic facilities like bed, desk, chair and cupboard. All accommodations have an internet connection. The bathroom, toilet and kitchen need to be shared with other international Saxion students, max. 6 students share common facilities.

You can apply for a room as soon as you have been admitted or conditionally admitted. The deadline for applying for Saxion accommodation is 1 May 2018. After this date, it is no longer possible to reserve a room and you will be put on a waiting list.

Master programmes: 15 August 2018 – 15 August 2019, total rental fee: € 5,150 (12 months). You are allowed to pay your rental fee in installments.

The programme provides thorough preparation for positions in the national/international business-to-business textile industry and in companies, where crossovers with textile-based applications are important.

After graduation, you can work in a wide variety of positions and roles in which innovation is important, such as Product Development Manager, Product Manager, Innovation Manager, Sustainability Manager, or Business Development Manager.
