The dynamic domains of facility and real estate management are becoming increasingly intertwined. When it comes to creating an optimal environment for working, caring or living, real estate and facilities are inextricably linked.

Strategic challenges require an integral approach in order to achieve business objectives. This creates a need for experts who can collaborate across disciplinary borders and who have the right knowledge to enable them to place the challenges in a broad perspective.

The Master Facility and Real Estate Management (FREM) raises your competence to an academic level. It is intended for students who are aiming to fulfill a role at management or policy making level, or who want to manage complex projects. The programme is aligned with the real world of work and is regularly updated based on the most recent scientific insights.

After successfully completing the course you will receive two master degree certificates (double degree):

The master degree in Facility and Real Estate Management from Saxion MFREM

The British Master of Science in Facility and Real Estate Management MSc from the University of Greenwich UK

The course takes twelve months in the full-time programme. It consists of five modules and is concluded with a master thesis.

Strategic Business Management, zooms in on leadership and business strategies and their impact on primary and supportive processes within organizations. You will come to consider how the (organization of) supportive processes may contribute to organizational goals in a balanced way.

Strategic Building Management, pays attention to long term real estate strategies. It discusses property valuation of buildings and how to develop an improvement plan that aims to increase the building performance for its users.

Strategic Asset Management, focuses on the financial perspective of a real estate portfolio. The central question is how the portfolio performance can be improved from a financial perspective. To do so, management information is collected and analyzed.

Strategic Facility Management, is about the added value of buildings, housing and facilities. This includes how to organize facilities, service levels, insourcing and outsourcing, procurement, and contract and supply chain management.

Academic skills, prepares you for the work on your master thesis. You learn how to assess and select sources and how to critically evaluate research reports. You also learn about research design and research methods and you apply this knowledge to develop a proposal for your master thesis.

The master thesis concludes the programme. This module gives you the opportunity to do research into complex real-life issues within the facility and real estate profession.

In September the programme starts with an intensive kick-off week providing you with the necessary academic skills. After the kick-off week, modules are taught on Thursdays and Fridays. During the final term of the programme you will work individually on your master thesis.

The working language for the modules (both lessons and exams as well as presentations and projects) is English. The group size of the full-time programme will be approximately 25 students (both Dutch and international). Part-time and full-time groups can be combined for a number of modules.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

As an international applicant, you will also be required to demonstrate sufficient results of one of these tests:

CAE (Cambridge Advanced Certificate), or CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

IELTS test (minimum overall band score of 6.0, and minimum subscore of 6.0 for speaking)

TOEFL test (minimum score of 80 internet-based, and minimum subscore of 20 for speaking)

In order to be admitted to the course you must also have a bachelor degree in facility management, real estate management, or a related subject such as industrial engineering and management, building and architecture, or hotel management. 

Additionally, to enroll in the part-time programme you must have at least one year of relevant experience post qualified working experience 

The student qualifications will be assessed by the admission officer on the basis of  a Curriculum Vitae and a letter of motivation. An interview may also be part of the admission process.

Applying for the September courses of the academic year 2018-2019 will be possible until the application deadline of July 1, 2018.

We encourage European students to find their own accommodation.

However, in case you would like to have everything arranged in time and want to immerse yourself in international student life, we offer the possibility to reserve a room in one of our international student houses. In all three cities we have contracts with the local student housing associations. They provide Saxion with accommodation with rooms, which may vary in size. The rooms are all single rooms and furnished with basic facilities like bed, desk, chair and cupboard. All accommodations have an internet connection. The bathroom, toilet and kitchen need to be shared with other international Saxion students, max. 6 students share common facilities.

You can apply for a room as soon as you have been admitted or conditionally admitted. The deadline for applying for Saxion accommodation is 1 May 2018. After this date, it is no longer possible to reserve a room and you will be put on a waiting list.

Master programmes: 15 August 2018 – 15 August 2019, total rental fee: € 5,150 (12 months). You are allowed to pay your rental fee in installments.

After this master degree programme you will be ready for management functions at a strategic level in the facility and real estate sector in both profit and non-profit organizations. A Master of Science qualification makes you an interesting candidate for positions within internationally oriented organizations. You can grow faster in your career and are equipped to handle complex projects and positions in policy development.
