International Hospitality and Service Management | NHL STENDEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

The 14-month master’s programme in International Hospitality and Service Management introduces you to key concepts such as service, hospitality, service concepts and customer satisfaction, as well as covering areas as diverse as sustainability, entrepreneurship, globalization and working with multicultural teams. You will be trained as a specialist in these areas over a 14-month period, taking four ten-week modules. You will attend classes based on a variety of teaching methods, including seminars, workshops, lectures, presentations, group assignments and guest lectures.

As a hospitality and service management professional, you will have an interesting job in a dynamic and exciting industry. You will be trained for a strategic management position, managing all aspects of the services provided. You will help develop the organizational structure, strategies, processes and corporate culture from the customer’s perspective.

Three research modules parallel to modules 1-3 prepare you to write your thesis by exploring how to define a contemporary hospitality/service management research topic, how to write a well-balanced and detailed research proposal, and how to perform appropriate data collection and analysis.

Lecturers from the University of Derby will regularly be visiting NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences (NL) to conduct lectures and seminars with Master students in preparation for the field trip.

Three-week field trip to the University of Derby (UK) - students will be able to visit the UK and participate in an intensive two-week workshop schedule at the University of Derby.  Accommodation has been arranged for all students to stay within the University campus’s Halls of Residence.

This master is also offered as a part time program, with a duration of 26 months.

The tuition fee for a single degree is € 6.750 (annual fee) and for a Dual Degree (MA/MSc) € 8.375 (annual fee).

Once every two weeks on Friday, you will come to Leeuwarden for a day of lectures. Each module a professor of the University of Derby visits Leeuwarden to educate full-time students for four days. Part-time students are also able to participate in these events. The fifth day is reserved especially for part-time students. In addition to the lectures, you will study on your own accord. This takes about 15 hours each week.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

The level required for admission should be an equivalent of the Academic IELTS 6.0 (International English Language Testing System), with a minimum of 5.0 for each skill.

TOEFL 550 (paper based), 213 (computer-based) and 80 (internet based).

Cambridge ESOL score FCE-C (169, or higher).

You require a Bachelor’s degree to be admitted to the International Hospitality and Service Management programme. If you do not hold a bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business, Management, Hospitality, Tourism, Leisure Studies or a related course, but would like to enroll in the Master’s programme in Service Management. your application will be assessed on individual merits. A personal interview is part of the application process.

Finding a place to live in the north of the Netherlands, where NHL Stenden’s branches are located is relatively easy.

Once you have been admitted and have registered for a study programme at NHL Stenden, you should start looking for accommodation. We recommend you to start early with finding a suiting accommodation. This way you can ensure you find the right place to live during your study.

In the Netherlands, it is common for students to rent a room in a shared house or apartment with other students. There are also options to rent a one-bedroom or studio apartment. Student accommodation is usually provided by real estate agents or private landlords who advertise their rooms on different platforms.  

Many people use Facebook to advertise accommodation and to find flatmates. 

A master’s degree (MA) in International Hospitality and Service Management prepares you for a successful career in the service or hospitality industry. This industry is growing at a tremendous pace with an expected increase of more than 30% of jobs worldwide by 2022. The hospitality industry is undergoing constant change, not least driven by shifting customer demands.
