Leisure & Events Management | NHL STENDEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

You will juggle a multitude of tasks as a Leisure and Events Management professional, acting as a key coordinator and communicating at all levels of the organization. Your work may involve anything from developing ideas for sporting events, booking concerts for a large pop music venue, to handling the marketing for a theme park or museum.

A bachelor’s degree in Leisure & Events Management is your ticket to a career in management, policy-making or consultancy in the world of sports, tourism, the media, recreation, and arts and culture. As a student in our course, we expect you to have inspiring ideas about sustainable leisure, be a strategic thinker and enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The Leisure & Event management course, offers three graduation profiles:

- Event Management

- Art & Cultural Management

- Sports Management

This first year provides you with a general overview of the leisure market and general service management. The focus during this year is mainly on the day-to-day operations of companies operating in the leisure industry. You and your fellow students will set up your own business together, which will familiarize you with the various aspects of running an enterprise.

In your second year, you will be tasked with organizing an event or project for a client in your future field and will enrich your student experience by taking a field trip to Disneyland Paris, or the popular Dutch theme park De Efteling. In addition, you will explore the intricacies of project management, imagineering, concept development, and research and take part in an internship at a company in the leisure sector one day a week for half a year.

In the third year of the programme, you will become involved in strategic management and carry out a research project in an organization in your future field. You will then choose to specialize in one of the following areas: Event Management, Sport Management, or Art and Culture Management. You also have the opportunity to complete part of your course at our campus sites in Qatar, South Africa, Thailand, or Indonesia (Grand Tour), or to spend a semester abroad as part of our international student exchange programme.

You will complete the programme in the 4th year, with an eight-months internship, which you may carry out at a company in the leisure industry all over the world. By this time, you will be all set for an exciting career in your chosen industry!

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

The level required for admission should be an equivalent of the Academic IELTS 6.0 (International English Language Testing System), with a minimum of 5.0 for each skill.

TOEFL 550 (paper based), 213 (computer-based) and 80 (internet based).

Cambridge ESOL score FCE-C (169, or higher).

Greek high school diploma (Apolytirio Genikou Lykeio), with a general grade of at least 10.

We advise you to apply before May 1, for the September study start.

Stenden University of Applied Sciences has the right to refuse applications by students, which meet the admission requirements, but which are sent after May 1.  

In case you have not obtained your secondary school diploma yet, you can already apply by submitting your current grade list.

Finding a place to live in the north of the Netherlands, where NHL Stenden’s branches are located is relatively easy.

Once you have been admitted and have registered for a study programme at NHL Stenden, you should start looking for accommodation. We recommend you to start early with finding a suiting accommodation. This way you can ensure you find the right place to live during your study.

In the Netherlands, it is common for students to rent a room in a shared house or apartment with other students. There are also options to rent a one-bedroom or studio apartment. Student accommodation is usually provided by real estate agents or private landlords who advertise their rooms on different platforms.  

Many people use Facebook to advertise accommodation and to find flatmates.

Careers open to you after graduation include: Event Manager at a sports marketing company - Booking Manager/Entertainment Manager for a major music venue - Marketing and Communications Manager at a theme park - Museum Project Manager - Government Policy Officer focusing on tourism and recreation - Starting your own business.

If you are looking to specialize after your bachelor, we recommend that you enroll in our master programme in International Leisure and Tourism Studies.

With a Bachelors diploma from Stenden University of Applied Sciences, you can continue doing a Master’s programme. If you want to do this abroad, you can usually start straightaway. If you have done your minor at a research university in the Netherlands during the third year of your studies at the Stenden University of Applied Sciences, you can normally get direct access to a Master’s programme at a research university in the Netherlands as well. Otherwise for continuing with a Master study in the Netherlands, you may be requested to do a Pre-Master.
