About

HZ University of Applied Sciences is located in the South-West of the Netherlands in the province of Zeeland. This is the most popular touristic region of the country, next to the sea, with wide sandy beaches and the most hours of sun per year in the Netherlands.

HZ has around 4,800 students in 23 bachelor degree programs, seven of which are taught in English. Some 500 students come from outside the Netherlands, so we have a great mix of Dutch and international students. Easy mathematics will tell you that with such numbers, classes are going to be small.

HZ offers high-quality study programs with a personal approach, our slogan is “Where students matter”. Teachers and staff put great emphasis on individual coaching. Your study coach will help you choose courses and explore your career possibilities

Every year the ‘Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs’ (Guide to Higher Education) holds a survey of higher education in the Netherlands. For eight years in a row, the guide has ranked HZ in the top 3 of multidisciplinary Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences. The small student groups, practical approach and international orientation are among HZ’s assets. But also the classrooms, workspaces and computer facilities, were rated as excellent.

Courses are offered at two facilities, in the city of Vlissingen and in the city of Middelburg. With its beautiful sandy beach, scenic seaside promenade and pavement café’s, Vlissingen has a year round holiday atmosphere. Middelburg has one of the most beautiful old city centers of the Netherlands, with plenty of historic monuments. You will find cozy restaurants and pubs in Middelburg, as well as many outdoor café’s. Both towns are small enough to get around the Dutch way: by bike, but at the same time large enough to enjoy a real student life.

Just over one hour by train to Rotterdam and The Hague and a little over two hours to Amsterdam, your options for short trips are many. Vlissingen and Middelburg are also close to the Belgian border, so Antwerp and Brussels are also almost at your doorstep.

The well-being of every student is a primary focus. We realize that students invest in us as an education facility. Therefore we also invest in our students, to help them make the most of their higher educational experience.

Beginning in your first year with the HZ, you will be assigned a personal study career coach, to assist with mapping out your individual study plan. This is extremely helpful in the beginning, because at this stage you may not be fully aware of all possibilities available to help reach your goals. As you progress in your studies, you will gradually make decisions independently, but your personal coach is always available for advice.
In addition to guidance provided by your study career coach, HZ also offers an on campus Student Counseling Bureau for any personal matter. Consisting of counselors, student psychologist and student pastor, this centre is a resource for all students who need help of any kind. It is a point of contact for guidance, support, advice and information. Here you will find trusted representatives for complaints and any problems you may encounter.

HZ has partnered housing company APV to make it easier for students to find a place to live. Once you have registered at HZ, you can start booking a room with APV, which offers student accommodations in Vlissingen and Middelburg. Prices start from € 250 per month all in and increase depending on the size of the room and required comfort.

The Dutch ministry expects the following monthly costs for 2018: € 870.46 living costs (including accommodation).

Most student houses are near the city centers of Vlissingen and Middelburg and within cycling distance of HZ. In Vlissingen you are also close to the Boulevard and beach when you want to get a breath of fresh air. Make sure you reserve a room in time (preferably in the early spring), so you have the best chances to book the room that suits your wishes. You have several options regarding renting a room. Accommodation varies from single units, to three to nine-bedroom apartments with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. HZ does not to make a reservation for accommodation, you have to do it yourself, or with the assistance of our representative in Greece.

Everybody knows that being a student is much more than studying, till the early hours of the morning and sweating at exams. That is just part of it ! The part that helps you expand your mind, test your brain, make you proud of your hard-won achievements and feel yourself slowly but certainly develop into a qualified professional with expert knowledge and managerial skills. That all is very important, but a well-balanced professional also needs to relax.

Fun, sports and being together with like-minded friends and going on trips: that is the reward for hard work. Vlissingen and Middelburg offer you everything you need to enjoy student life. Within cycling distance you will find shops, bars, the beach and loads of activities at HZ itself.

The HZ has exchange agreements with partner universities around the world. This gives you the option of studying abroad for one semester. At no additional fees, this is a great opportunity for those interested in studying half a year in countries such as France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, America, Canada, or South Korea.

Official statistics show that for the year 2015, 80 % of the Bachelors graduates of a Dutch University of Applied Sciences, found a suitable job in their specific field and level, within 3 months of obtaining their diploma.

These indicators are considerably lower for graduates from a Dutch Research University. The reason for this is that the education system of the Universities of Applied Science is more practical and directly related to a certain profession, whereas the education philosophy of the Research Universities is more general and scientifically orientated.

With the Dutch economy recovering and growing at a fast pace in 2017, these indicators for the Universities of Applied Sciences are expected to have improved significantly in 2018. In fact, for some fields of study, students are at the moment already offered suitable jobs before graduating.

29% of our graduates continue studying with a Master’s programme.
