's-Hertogenbosch, or Den Bosch as it is colloquially known, is a historical city and one of the oldest in the Netherlands. The city is overflowing with festivals and events all year round. Carnival for instance is a big thing here and every year in February, the city transforms into the “Carnival Capital” of the Netherlands. The city is home to two universities: HAS University of Applied Sciences and Avans University of Applied Sciences and hosts a substantial international student population.
Den Bosch is just over an hour by train from Amsterdam. There are also easy train and metro routes from Den Bosch, to Rotterdam and The Hague; the trip takes less than an hour. Antwerp and Brussels in Belgium are also at just over one hour and resp. two hours by train from Den Bosch.
Venlo, also one of the oldest cities in Holland, is a vibrant and lively town in the south east of the Netherlands, close to the German border, situated on the banks of the river Meuse (“Maas” in Dutch), characterized by an international outlook. It is home to about 100,000 people. Being the capital of northern Limburg, the city hosts three institutions for higher education: HAS University of Applied Sciences, Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Maastricht University (Venlo branch). Its inner city was awarded the title of “Best City Centre” in 2014 and 2015.
The train station at Venlo serves as an interchange for many destinations and as such it is very easy to get to many cities, such Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Maastricht, as well as to the close by German cities of Duisburg and Cologne. There are also a number of buses traveling to cities such as Amsterdam, Arnhem, Dusseldorf, Eindhoven, Essen, Cologne etc.

Arriving from Greece or Cyprus, we aim to make the transition to studying and living in Holland for you as smooth as possible. Each student has a personal coach (academic consultant) for the duration of their studies at the HAS. Coaching takes place during regular coaching sessions that focus primarily on the student’s personal development. The coaching sessions cover all aspects of the student's wellbeing, learning progress, the various possibilities within the curriculum, feedback from previous modules, courses and projects, and how the student performs during internships. They also cover decisions related to the possibilities for development during the final phase of the study program, career choices and continuing with Master studies etc.
HAS University of Applied Sciences wants to provide good support for its students on their journey to their degree. In addition to regular student support focused on progress, personal development and study track, extra support is also available for students who require it.
A student with personal problems can also ask for special temporary coaching, by our “Study-plus contact persons”. This type of support does not focus on the course content or results, but on the personal problem that is affecting the course and the student’s ability to study. This may be a study-related problem such as study postponement, fear of speaking in public, or of exams, but also psychosocial problems, such as severe embarrassment, motivation problems, indecisiveness or homesickness.
We encourage European students to find their own accommodation.

Making your student years the best time of your life, is what you want and not just in class ! The south of Holland “below the big rivers”, is generally regarded as a region with a more “loose” lifestyle than the north of the country. Historically this can be explained by the fact that the south of the Netherlands uses to be predominantly Catholic, whereas the north had a Protestant majority.
