City of Apeldoorn

Apeldoorn is a city in the center of the Netherlands in the province of Gelderland with approximately 150,000 residents. It is a relatively new city, although it has a long history going back to the 700’s as a small village. The city is located in an area called the Veluwe, a large nature reserve. Few cities in the Netherlands can match Apeldoorn in terms of quality of living and surrounding landscape.

Apeldoorn is probably best known as the location of the palace “Het Loo”. Built in the 17th century, it is now the summer home of the Dutch royal family. Although the palace itself is a wonderful place, probably the best part of it for tourists are its impressive gardens.

Another well know attraction in Apeldoorn is the Apenheul, a world-famous zoo that is home to several monkey and ape communities. You are a guest between monkeys, that walk around freely in this spacious, green habitat.

Apeldoorn today is known as a happy and modern place to live. It has lots of green spaces, good facilities and a main line train terminus and plenty of work opportunities. Apeldoorn offers great student life and is home to a wide range of museums. If you enjoy the outdoors and cultural venues, Apeldoorn is your city.

If you are going shopping in Apeldoorn you will find all of the usual brands and department stores as you would get in any big town, in the Hoofdstraat and the Oranjerie, is a very modern shopping mall. But if your taste in shopping is a bit more off beat, then you will find antique, art and alternative shops on the Asselsestraat.

There are many places to eat in Apeldoorn, apart from all of the usual fast food establishments, there are some great local eateries and restaurants as well.

The city is only about 90km from Amsterdam and you can get with the train from Schiphol airport Amsterdam straight to Apeldoorn in just over an hour.

With two Universities of Applied Sciences based here (Saxion and Wittenborg), Apeldoorn has a sizable student population.

Tired of studying or working and feel like you need to unwind and relax with a nice drink and some great food? Most of your fellow students decide to do this at Willy’s. This cafe in the centre of Apeldoorn offers great music and friendly staff to ensure you feel welcome there.

Every year several outdoor festivals take place on the market square in the city centre. “Dancetour” and “Summerloverz” are the two biggest and well-known festivals. Summerloverz usually takes place in July. The King Town Jazz & Soul is the newest of festivals in the Apeldoorn area. Every year during the last weekend of May a variety of bands plays live music on several stages in the city center. Jazz in the Woods is free, and therefore nearly 60.000 people attend this event. In the past, the bands which have played at King Town Jazz & Soul were Jazz bands, but nowadays you can also hear pop, blues, hip-hop, reggae, big band and other music styles. The event lasts for around 3 days.
