The International Business study, prepares you for a role in international management. You will acquire broad knowledge of international management, marketing, organizations and finance. You will develop relevant professional skills, such as intercultural teamwork, planning, leadership and business communication.

A large multinational wants to tap into a new market in Brazil; you give the management advice on marketing. A mobile phone manufacturer wants to relocate some of its production to Eastern Europe; you research the options and write a business plan.

As an international business manager you can advise on all sorts of business matters. Like communication, marketing, trade, sales, or finance. You approach international business issues from various perspectives and resolve them.

You can personalize your program with elective courses. These courses can make you a specialist in e.g. a region like Asia, or a certain field of interest like: sustainability, research, project management, or data management. You will spend at least 1 year abroad and you may obtain a double degree.

Avans University of Applied Sciences is the first Higher Education Institution in the Netherlands to receive the “FIBAA Premium Seal”. This Seal is awarded to the program International Business and Management Studies.

In year 1 you will gain basic knowledge that you will apply later. The topics focus on marketing, finance, statistics and business processes. You will take language classes in English and 1 or 2 other foreign languages. You will do group projects and visit international companies. And you will practice skills, like how to conduct meetings and think creatively. You can take 60 ECTS credits in each year of study. You must earn a minimum of 52 ECTS credits in year 1 in order to progress to year 2.

1st Year Subjects: English, 2nd foreign language, Organizational behavior and management, Law, Financial accounting, Marketing, Mathematics, Economics, International Business, Management Accounting, Business Research Methods, Statistics + SPSS, Intercultural Management, Financial and Management Accounting.

Year 2 is about deepening and applying knowledge. You will take subjects like project management and corporate culture. You will also do a work placement at an international organization in the Netherlands, or abroad. Your work placement will involve day-to-day activities and responsibilities as well as a special assignment. You will be responsible for finding your own work placement. Avans has good contacts with many companies and can offer you help.

Investment Decisions, Marketing, Economics, English, 2nd Foreign Language, Financial and Management Decisions, Marketing, Management and Organization.     

Work placement

Year 3 deals with International Business Operations, focusing on law, supply chain, business and currency risks. You will follow an exchange program at one of our partner institutions (we have partners in many countries both within and outside Europe), or complete a minor to expand or deepen your knowledge and skills.

- Minor International Entrepreneurship

This minor deals with setting-up, running and managing a start-up in an international setting.

- Minor International Business Operations

International business is characterized by rapid changes and the growing importance of international markets.

- Minor International Public Affairs & Stakeholder Management

This minor deals with the interaction between international business, governments and civil society. You learn how to take their interests into consideration in your decision-making.

3rd Year Subjects:

International Economics, International Law, Financial Management, Currency Risk, International Business, Supply Chain Management, Business Research Methods, English.

The first semester of year 4 is about Strategic Business Decisions. In the second semester, you will do your graduation internship.

4th Year Subjects: Strategic Finance, Strategic Marketing , Strategic Management and HRM, English.

At the end of your study program, you will carry out a graduation assignment. An assignment related to a problem that a company is facing will be allocated to you in semester 1 of year 4. You will spend the second semester finding a solution to this problem using research while doing an internship. There are 3 stages involved: the research proposal stage, the implementation/validation stage and the defense stage.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English.

The level required for admission should be an equivalent of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 or higher, or TOEFL iBT score of 80 or higher, or diploma’s such as:

Cambridge Lower (FCE) Grade B (180-184)

Cambridge Advanced (CAE) Grade C (180 - 184)

Cambridge Proficiency (CPE)

Greek high school diploma (Apolytirio Genikou Lykeio), with a general grade of at least 16; preferably with Mathematics and Economics.

Avans does not offer student accommodation.

We have however partnered with the 2 major housing associations in Breda to launch an accommodation reservation system. All rooms are fully furnished. In all cases you will share a flat with other students, usually international students. Rental prices range from €370 to €475 per month. This includes water, electricity, gas and internet access. You will need to pay the rent for the full semester in 1 payment when you sign the rental agreement. Please be aware that a limited number of accommodations are offered on this website, so not all students can be accommodated directly via the 2 housing associations.

If there are any rooms available, you can reserve one on the condition that you have been selected by the coordinator of your program and that you will be studying one of the following program Bachelor’s degree program:

- Finance & Control (international)

Avans also is a partner of international student-to-student housing platform HousingAnywhere.com. If you are coming from abroad, you can use this website to book a student room. The rooms on this platform are offered by Avans students who are going abroad to study, graduate or complete a work placement. Using the platform is free for you as a student.

If you are going to be studying in Breda, the website 'Klik voor kamers' ('click for rooms') also is a good place to look for accommodation. Klik voor kamers offers a first-year guarantee arrangement for students who are starting a bachelor's degree program for the first time, giving them priority when assigning an unfurnished room based on traveling time. This also applies to foreign students.

There are several other agencies, organizations or websites that can help you find accommodation in each Avans city. Early registration for accommodation prior to the start of the study program is a must.

They work mainly in Marketing (24%), Sales (19%), Accounting / Finance (18%) and Logistics (8%).

Potential Careers:

- Business development officer

You create strategic plans and formulate action plans for new business ventures. You concentrate on finding new business and expanding current business into new local, regional, national or international markets.

- Account manager

 You are responsible for establishing and maintaining relations with business customers as well as for concluding transactions. You develop the strategic and tactical plans for sales.

- Marketing manager

You promote the company's products or services and bring them to the attention of (potential) customers.

- Export manager

You buy products in the Netherlands, find buyers for these products abroad and ensure that the products are delivered abroad.

- Communications officer

You help implement the communication policy aimed at internal and external target groups. You are responsible for communicating the company's activities effectively. You know how to reach the different target groups.

- Human resource manager

You are involved with the recruitment and selection of new staff and with the personal development of employees. You also deal with restructuring measures or mass redundancies, employment terms and salaries and the work environment.

After your studies you can do a master's in the Netherlands or abroad, such as International Management, Master of Science in Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Logistics or Supply Chain Management. Or you can take a post-graduate MBA program.
